Previews: "Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person" and more

What's upcoming this week and soon after

A romance in the vein, so to speak, of the girl-meets-zombie classic Warm Bodies (2013), this take on semi-eternal love finds a French teen vampire — well, she’s 68 but looks 50 years younger — with failure to launch. Also failure to lunch, and her vampire parents want her to grow the hell up and do her own damn hunting. Here’s the trailer. I’ll give my take Thursday morning on whether this John-Hughes-meets-Twilight effort is worth its weight in blood.

Next week’s review: A Quiet Place: Day One

Experience the day the world went quiet. That’s it. That’s the official synopsis to this prequel to A Quiet Place (2018). I’ve also seen “Hear how it all began,” but I don’t know if that’s the film’s tagline or someone somewhere being clever, in which case: kudos. Here’s Lupita Nyong’o talking about the cat(s) in the movie, which opens wide in theaters June 28.

Also, not for an upcoming review but to keep you informed of new releases in the genre:

Blackwater Lane

After witnessing a grisly tragedy, a woman is visited by a ghostly presence and starts to question her sanity. Minka Kelly, Maggie Grace, Dermot Mulroney, Alan Calton and Natalie Simpson star in this adaptation of B.A. Paris’ novel. In theaters and digital / on demand Friday. Here’s a clip.
