Previews: "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" and more

What's upcoming this week and soon after

Beyond Thunderdome, there is Mad Max: Fury Road. And before Mad Max: Fury Road, there is Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga — a prequel featuring the origin story of the character played by Cherlize Thereon in that 2015 film. It also features an onscreen subtitle, although there is little chance of anyone not recognizing this as filmmaker George Miller’s iconic world, a creation that is to post-apocalyptic nihilism — and fashion — what Blade Runner is to cinematic cyberpunk and futuristic neo-noir. Here’s a minute from the movie, opening Friday, and for which my review goes up tomorrow.

Also, not necessarily for upcoming reviews but to keep you informed of new releases in this vein:

Stopmotion

A stop-motion animator is struggling to control her figurative demons after the loss of her overbearing mother. Now alone, she embarks upon the creation of a macabre new puppet film. As her mind starts to fracture, the characters in her movie take on a life of their own, and the unleashed power of her imagination threatens to destroy her. Coming to streaming May 31 following a limited theatrical release this past February.

The Exorcism

Academy Award-winner Russell Crowe stars as Anthony Miller, a troubled actor who begins to unravel while shooting a supernatural horror film. His estranged daughter wonders if he's slipping back into his past addictions or if there's something more sinister at play. The film also stars Sam Worthington, Chloe Bailey, Adam Goldberg and David Hyde Pierce. It comes to theaters June 7.

Wild Eyed and Wicked

Lily Pierce attempts to strike back at the medieval creature that’s haunted her family for generations. In order to do so, she must reconnect with her estranged father and learn how to draw upon a time of steel and blade. Coming to VOD on June 11
