An ancient evil is again cropping up to threaten New York, as though the city doesn’t have enough on its plate just being the 400-year-old home to some 8 million people, centuries of aging infrastructure and, yes, raucous ghosts. But by now I think it’s safe to say we all know who to call when some humongous grudge-holding demonic god starts acting up.
The newest entry in the formidable franchise stretching back to 1984’s horror-comedy Ghostbusters — plus a 1989 sequel and 2016 reboot, neither of which are what you’d call scary-good — Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire picks up from the 2021 sequel Ghostbusters: Afterlife. While that movie was well-enough received, the new one manages to improve upon it. Partly that’s the result of less need for slow-burn expository set-up, but also because it ups the action while continuing to expand its — to use a word I hate using in this context — universe.
