Once upon a time, science-fiction stories took place in outer space and were filled with hope and optimism. I grew up on Star Trek (NBC, 1966-1969) and however blunt a tool it was, the series ran on ‘60s positivity, the idea that all we needed to do was join hands and figure out how we can all get along regardless of our differences. But then came the ‘70s, y’know? And you can have your shiny Star Wars and Logan’s Run, but Alien (1979) defined a new kind of screen sci-fi for me, one crawling with horror that was nothing like the SF “horror” of drive-in films. Which is relevant because Hell Hole is most definitely located somewhere on the Alien family tree.
